Frequently asked questions
CBD derived from hemp is a phytocannabinoid, of which there are 113 cannabinoids.
Although our bodies can naturally produce their own endocannabinoids that bind to cannabinoid receptors in both the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system, phytocannabinoids are known to help to boost the function of our central regulatory system.
The endocannabinoid system is a complex biological system in the human body. Medical researchers discovered it in the 1990s, but much is still unknown about how it works and its interactions. Today, experts know that it impacts several major processes, including appetite, sleep, mood, and memory, but there is much more yet to be discovered.
The endocannabinoid system has three components: receptors, enzymes, and endocannabinoids. These parts function regardless of whether someone uses CBD or not. Here is an overview of each component: Receptors exist throughout the body and are a substance to which endocannabinoids bind; Enzymes appear in many forms, but only two types of enzymes break down endocannabinoids; and Endocannabinoids complement the body by keeping internal functions running smoothly. Understanding the effects of CBD involves examining the relationship between the receptors and endocannabinoids.
There are two types of receptors: CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are primarily in the central nervous system and are responsible for governing coordination, movement, pain, appetite, memory, mood, and other functions. CB2 receptors are in the peripheral nervous system, influencing pain, and inflammation. After the enzymes break down the cannabinoids, the endocannabinoids look to bind with receptors. Researchers believe that CBD does not directly attach itself to the receptor but influences it in some way. Activating these receptors is what allows for many of the health benefits that people associate with the compound.
CBD can also influence non-cannabinoid receptors. According to Teaera Roland of Lotus Health, CBD modulates the 5ht serotonin receptor, which can treat psychotic disorders. It can also affect the TRPV1 receptor, which is responsible for pain and inflammation.
Despite the scientific name cannabis sativa, industrial hemp has a maximum level of 0.3% of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Compare that to medical cannabis, which can have up to 30% THC. Hemp also has a high cannabidiol content that acts as THC’s antagonist. While you may consume these products while maintaining a clear mind, the below 0.3% THC level in any Full Spectrum Hemp product could make it possible to fail a drug test.
Not all hemp products are created equal. The hemp CBD market is unregulated, meaning companies can say whatever they want.
A lot of the hemp companies who state they have the best "Full Spectrum" Hemp CBD products, when looking at their lab results, are actually using CBD isolates, or are extracting their hemp using harsh solvents, like butane.
Harsh extraction methods strip hemp of it's full cannabinoid and terpene profiles, and it's the cannabinoids and terpenes that contain most of the therapeutic compounds, such as CBN, CBC, CBG, CBDA, and CBDV. These beneficial cannabinoids are not psychoactive and are being extensively studied scientifically for a wide variety of health benefits.
Our true Full Spectrum hemp products are organically grown and extracted by the very PhD botanists who not only helped map the cannabis genome, but who also developed a proprietary solventless extraction method that preserves the trichomes of the hemp plant.
The hemp for our products are grown on a regenerative, pesticide-free farm, and are made in small batches, ensuring you have the most pure hemp products available.
HIGH INTENSITY PESTICIDE-FREE AGRICULTURE!
We use only pesticide-free and organic growing practices ensuring a pure extract of the highest quality. Our farmers utilize high yield cultivation practices that blend organic horticultural and agricultural methodologies.
All of our hemp is sun-grown in Colorado!
Our high potency hemp flower is grown only to a scale that allows for proper drying and processing of flower, unlike many larger hemp farms which field dry or wet bail lower quality biomass.
It is possible to fail a drug test when you are consuming Full Spectrum Hemp Extract. All of our products contain trace amounts of THC (below 0.3%) that can build up in your system over time and cause a failed drug test. If this is of concern to you, purchase our Broad Spectrum (THC-Free) Tincture.
CBD (Cannabidiol) is a chemical compound that comes from the hemp plant. There are 113 unique compounds found in hemp known as cannabinoids, of which, CBD is one of the most abundant compounds. Cannabinoids can be either consumed (phytocannabinoids) or produced naturally by the body (endocannabinoid). They are chemical compounds that interact with the body’s central regulatory system. This system is known to manage homeostasis and affect bodily processes such as immune system functions, sleep, mood, memory, and appetite.
Although studies of CBD generally reflect a low risk of clinically significant drug interactions, drugs that are metabolized by the cytochrome P450 or CYP450 family of liver enzymes could be impacted by concurrent use of CBD. These drugs include Warfarin, Theophylline, Clobazam, Valproate, Alcohol. As a potent inhibitor of the enzyme CYP3A4, CBD may result in increased levels of drugs which require this enzyme to be metabolized. Boulder Hemp is not offering medical guidance and we suggest speaking with your healthcare provider before taking full spectrum or broad spectrum hemp products.
Research shows that higher doses of CBD can act as a sedative, promote feelings of calm, and help users fall and stay asleep. However, because CBD is biphasic, it has different effects in low doses which have been shown to have stimulative effects and cause alertness in average doses of approximately 15mg.
CBD will not make you feel high or intoxicated, although in rare cases, some people have reported sensitivity to full spectrum products. Although it is extracted from the Cannabis sativa plant, cannabidiol doesn’t have the same psychoactive properties as tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, the main active phytocannabinoid in marijuana. Despite this, studies have shown that CBD may help you feel less anxious, more relaxed, and even act as a stimulant in low doses. CBD is generally known for its functional support in decreasing anxiety and even helping to offset the anxiety often caused by THC when taken concurrently.
Regarded for its various benefits, CBD interacts with our body’s own endocannabinoid system. Research suggests that the major pathway for CBD’s actions is the inhibition of the breakdown of the endocannabinoid anandamide, just one of many endocannabinoids produced by our bodies and potentially impacted by CBD use.
CBD or cannabidiol is being studied for its varied health benefits. Because CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system mainly by inhibiting breakdown of anandamide, it’s therapeutic potential extends to many biological processes within our bodies. Research suggests that CBD may be useful for anxiety, pain, sleep, epilepsy, hormonal balance, inflammation, neurological disorders, bacteria and much more.
CBD is biphasic, meaning that in low doses of (around 15mg) it tends to act as a stimulant, exerting effects such as increased mental alertness and focus. In higher doses, CBD has sedative effects, giving it the potential to help alleviate stress, anxiety, and sleeping problems. Dosing is highly dependent on each individual. If you are new to CBD we recommend starting with a low dose like 10mg once a day and working your way up as needed. Some effects may be acute while others can take up to 30 days. We also highly recommend talking to your healthcare provider (or cannabinoid experts, like Holos Health) before taking any hemp supplements.
Unlike many hemp products on the market, Boulder Hemp uses Full Spectrum Hemp (that we organically grow ourselves, from seed to bottle) instead of using CBD isolate.
Full Spectrum Hemp contains all the bioactive compounds found in the hemp plant (i.e. terpenes, other cannabinoids, flavonoids, etc.) instead of just one compound. When all these compounds are consumed together, they enhance each other's desired effects, creating what researchers call The Entourage Effect. Additionally, Full Spectrum Hemp activates your body's own Endocannabinoid System and Endocrine System, which work together to regulate sleep, stress, chronic pain, recovery, hormonal balance, and so much more.
That being said, we do produce one Broad Spectrum product for those who are concerned about using Full Spectrum products, as Full Spectrum products may contain less than 0.3% THC.
